Mathematical modeling is a potent in silico tool that can help investigate, interpret, and predict the behavior of biological systems. The first step is to develop a working hypothesis of the biology. Then by “translating” the biological phenomena into equations, models can harness the power of mathematical analysis techniques to explore the dynamics and interactions of the biological components. Models can be used together with traditional experimental models to help design new experiments, test hypotheses, identify mechanisms, and predict outcomes. This article reviews the process of building, calibrating, and using mathematical models in the context of the kinetics of receptor and signal transduction biology. An example model related to the androgen receptor-mediated regulation of the prostate is presented to illustrate the steps in the modeling process and to highlight the potential for mathematical modeling in this area.  相似文献

Abstract 1. Many Salicaceae species naturally form hybrid swarms with parental and hybrid taxa that differ in secondary chemical profile and in resistance to herbivores. Theoretically, the differential mortality in the seedling stage can lead to changes in trait expression and alter subsequent interactions between plants and herbivores. This study examines whether herbivory by the generalist slug Arion subfuscus, which causes extensive mortality in young willow seedlings, causes shifts in (a) the foliar chemistry of F2 willow hybrids (Salix sericea and Salix eriocephala), and (b) the subsequent susceptibility to Japanese Beetles, Popillia japonica. 2. In 2001, two populations of F2 seedlings were generated: those that survived slug herbivory (80–90% of seedlings placed in the field were killed by the slugs) were designated as S-plants, whereas C-plants (controls) experienced no mortality. 3. Common garden experiments with cuttings from these populations, in 2001 and 2002, revealed extensive variation in the phenolic chemistry of F2 hybrids, but revealed no significant difference between S- and C-plants, although the levels of foliar nutrients, proteins and nitrogen tended to be higher in S-plants. 4. Concentrations of salicortin and 2′-cinnamoylsalicortin explained 55 and 38% of the the variation in leaf damage caused by Japanese beetles, and secondary chemistry was highly correlated within replicate clones (salicortin R2= 0.85, 2-cinnamoylsalicortin R2= 0.77, condensed tannins R2= 0.68). 5. Interestingly, Japanese beetle damage and condensed tannins were positively correlated within the S-plants, but not in the C-plants, suggesting that slugs had selected for plants with a positive relationship between tannins and P. japonica damage. This is unlikely to be a consequence of a preference for tannins, but is suggested to be related to the elevated nutrient levels in the S-plants, perhaps in combination with the complex-binding properties of tannins. 6. The damage was highly correlated within replicate clones and a model choice analysis suggested that Japanese beetle damage may be explained by four factors: concentrations of salicortin, condensed tannins, and nitrogen, as well as the specific leaf area (thick leaves were damaged less).  相似文献

1. In the last decade, many attempts have been made to contain the spread of the North American crayfish Procambarus clarkii , an invader of many European water bodies, but none has been successful.
2. This study investigates the effects that ionising irradiation has on the reproduction of P. clarkii males by analysing the behaviour of the treated individuals, their reproductive output, the vitality and survival of their offspring and the damages induced to their gonads.
3. We found that a dose of 20 Gy X-rays did not compromise either the survival or the mating ability of males, but reduced the size of their testes and significantly altered spermatogenesis. The number of aborted eggs was larger in clutches sired by treated males, with a consequent reduction (by 43%) in the number of offspring.
4. These results foster hopes in our efforts to control invasive crayfish, showing the potential effectiveness of ionising irradiation to reduce male fertility in the perspective of adopting the Sterile Male Release Technique to control P. clarkii populations.  相似文献

1. Nitrogen (N) processing in streams has been investigated using whole‐stream 15N addition experiments that, in general, have found that a large proportion of added nitrate removed from the water column appears to be assimilated by the stream benthos. The long‐term fate of this retained N is unknown, and of particular interest is the possibility that it becomes denitrified through coupled mineralisation–nitrification–denitrification processes (indirect denitrification). 2. We used in situ chambers to produce highly 15N‐enriched benthic biofilms and removed the chambers to allow biofilms to interact with ambient stream conditions. Nitrogen assimilation and direct denitrification were estimated from the first chamber deployment. Chambers were periodically reinstalled over 4 weeks to measure tracer 15N in ammonium (), nitrate () and dinitrogen (N2), from which we estimated subsequent rates of biotic N transformations, including N mineralisation (ammonification), nitrification and indirect denitrification. We also estimated rates of depuration of 15N tracer from benthic biomass compartments. 3. Nitrate uptake was roughly equivalent in the sand and cobble habitats that dominated the stream. Direct denitrification (denitrification of from the water column) was an order of magnitude higher in cobble habitats than in sand habitats, accounting for c. 26 and 2% of total nitrate uptake in cobble and sand, respectively. 4. Mean residence times of actively cycling organic N in stream benthos (algae and microbes) were 16 days in cobble habitats and 9 days in sand habitats. The difference between habitat types was driven by the influence of N residence time in epilithic biofilms (18 days) on cobbles. 5. Release of enriched 15 was the primary flux of remineralised N, while release of enriched 15 was an order of magnitude less. We detected slight 15N enrichment in dissolved nitrogen gas (N2) in post‐enrichment sampling, indicating that indirect denitrification was taking place. However, indirect denitrification accounted for <0.1% of the assimilated N. 6. These experiments agree with results of whole‐stream 15N additions, in that most added N was assimilated rather than directly denitrified. Assimilation was primarily a short‐term N retention mechanism in this stream, and indirect denitrification of assimilated N accounted for only a minor proportion of the observed 15N loss over time. 7. Remaining possible fates include export of N as particulate organic matter, which may lead to additional storage of assimilated N in downstream habitats, and consumption by grazers.  相似文献

ABSTRACT We examined home range behavior of female feral pigs (Sus scrofa) in a heavily hunted population on Fort Benning Military Reservation in west-central Georgia, USA. We used Global Positioning System location data from 24 individuals representing 18 sounders (i.e., F social groups) combined with mark-recapture and camera-trap data to evaluate evidence of territorial behavior at the individual and sounder levels. Through a manipulative experiment, we examined evidence for an inverse relationship between population density and home range size that would be expected for territorial animals. Pigs from the same sounder had extensive home range overlap and did not have exclusive core areas. Sounders had nearly exclusive home ranges and had completely exclusive core areas, suggesting that female feral pigs on Fort Benning were territorial at the sounder level but not at the individual level. Lethal removal maintained stable densities of pigs in our treatment area, whereas density increased in our control area; territory size in the 2 areas was weakly and inversely related to density of pigs. Territorial behavior in feral pigs could influence population density by limiting access to reproductive space. Removal strategies that 1) match distribution of removal efforts to distribution of territories, 2) remove entire sounders instead of individuals, and 3) focus efforts where high-quality food resources strongly influence territorial behaviors may be best for long-term control of feral pigs.  相似文献

Rapid climate change will impose strong directional selection pressures on natural plant populations. Climate-linked genetic variation in natural populations indicates that an evolutionary response is possible. We investigated such a response by comparing individuals subjected to elevated drought and warming treatments with individuals establishing in an unmanipulated climate within the same population. We report that reduction in seedling establishment in response to climate manipulations is nonrandom and results from the selection pressure imposed by artificially warmed and droughted conditions. When compared against control samples, high single-locus genetic divergence occurred in drought and warming treatment samples, with genetic differentiation up to 37 times higher than background (mean neutral locus) genetic differentiation. These loci violate assumptions of selective neutrality, indicating the signature of natural selection by drought. Our results demonstrate that rapid evolution in response to climate change may be widespread in natural populations, based on genetic variation already present within the population.  相似文献

1. We hypothesized that changes in bacterial colony growth would be correlated to shifts in riparian vegetation (via leachate quality) along a river continuum of a south-eastern, blackwater stream (U.S.A.). Spatially, we expected bacterial assemblages from downstream reaches to utilize more sources of leachate and at higher concentrations than bacteria collected from headwater reaches. Temporally, we predicted higher colony growth on leachate from autumn-shed (senescent) leaves compared with leachate from fresh, green leaves.
2. We examined spatial differences in assemblage growth by culturing bacteria sampled along the stream continuum on gradient plates using leachates from four common riparian species ( Taxodium distichum , Carya spp., Acer rubrum and Decumaria barbara ). Bacteria from the lowest site were able to use all sources provided and at all concentrations, whereas bacteria from upper reaches could not. Colony density was correlated to relative leachate concentration at all sites along the continuum.
3. Leachates from fresh and senescent A. rubrum leaves were used to determine temporal differences. Winter assemblages of bacteria could not grow on fresh leaf leachate at any concentration but grew well on autumn leaf leachate at higher concentrations. Differential response of bacterial assemblages indicated local adaptation to potential sources of dissolved organic matter.
4. Growth response of stream bacterial colonies appeared to be dependent on the timing and source of leachate as well as on sources of dissolved organic carbon from further upstream. Growth of bacterial assemblages exhibited 'generalist' characteristics in headwater reaches and 'specialist' characteristics at the mouth of our study stream drainage. Thus, our findings lend support to the argument that variable resource habitats favour a small, generalist assemblage, while environments with stable resource supplies allow for highly diverse assemblages dominated by specialists.  相似文献
